Meet the first Indie-mill artists.

It’s our great pleasure to reveal the artists selected for our brand-new theatre development program, Indie-mill.

Launching in July 2025, Indie-mill sees Windmill championing new, independent theatre made for family audiences. The program provides paid creative development opportunities for South Australian artists to pitch original concepts, assemble their favourite collaborators and access the full scope of Windmill’s resources. Over two weeks, each team will bring an idea to life in a rehearsal studio at Adelaide College of the Arts, with support from Windmill’s production, producing and marketing teams.

“We were blown away by the calibre of talent and originality that came through the applications,” says Windmill’s Artistic Director, Clare Watson. Indie-mill is about giving artists the time, support and space to follow their instincts, push boundaries and collaborate collectively, bringing a concept further along its path towards production. The thought of having 22 South Australian artists across four projects, with us here at Windmill for two weeks is exhilarating and we can’t wait to get started.”

Following an open call-out that attracted 35 applications from across the state, Windmill is proud to announce the following teams:

  • Ashton Malcolm, Elizabeth Hay, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Andreanna Massacci, Hen Vaughan, Renate Henschke and Emma Beech
  • Matt Crook, James Smith, Chris Asimos, Kyron Weetra, Annabel Matheson and Olivia Zanchetta
  • Kristen O’Dwyer, Alexis West, Samara Fernandes Brown, Chantal Henley, Jamie Goldsmith and Aunty Angelena Harradine
  • Will Spartalis, Erin Fowler and Hew Parham

Executive Director, Kaye Weeks. “As a company that makes new work, we know the value in gathering together in a space, with a stellar group of artists to develop an idea. It’s difficult for independent artists to fund this important stage in a project’s life and we are thrilled to be able support four new ideas this year.”

Indie-mill officially begins in July 2025. Follow Windmill for behind-the-scenes updates and insights.
