Access and Inclusion Program

Access and Inclusion Program

Theatre is about community and that means that everyone should be able to access our work. At Windmill, accessibility is an ongoing conversation between us and our audiences to ensure that all young people and their families are supported when attending the theatre.

2025 ACCESSIBLE PERFORMANCES

Relaxed Performances

We regularly provide relaxed performances for selected performances both in Adelaide, and in partnership with our venue partners on the road.

In a relaxed performance, the music, sound, and lighting effects are adjusted to reduce anxiety and remove the element of surprise. The lighting in the auditorium is kept low so the audience is never in the dark. Other theatre effects (eg. strobe lighting, smoke machines, sound) have been removed or kept low.

During a Relaxed Performance, a relaxed attitude is taken to movement, noise and eating/drinking in the auditorium. If you need to take a break during the show, you are welcome to leave the theatre and you can return when you are ready – trained staff are available to assist as required. In these performances, we encourage audiences to bring their own items that will help make them feel comfortable in the theatre, such as headphones, sunglasses fidget toys etc.

For more information or to know what Relaxed Performances are available across the year, contact access@windmill.org.au or call 08 8210 7200.

Blind and/or Vision Impaired

Audio Description

All Adelaide seasons feature an audio-described performance for blind and/or vision impaired audience members. These include sensory tours of props and costumes, description of the set and staging and introductions to our actors. Audio description is accessed via headphones which are provided at the venue. You may also bring your own headphones.

Audio Description services are available for school performances on demand – contact access@windmill.org.au or call 08 8210 7200 to request.

Sensory Tour

Touch or Sensory tours are a guided or tactile tour prior to a live performance, where patrons with vision impairments may touch selected props and set pieces.

Deaf and hard of hearing

Assistive Listening

A Biodynamic Hearing System is available for performances at Adelaide Festival Centre for patrons requiring hearing assistance. Transmitter packs are available to borrow from the Ticketek Box Office in the Dunstan Playhouse foyer 30 minutes before the performance. You may also bring your own headphones. For information about touring venues, please reach out to us directly by calling 08 8210 7200 or by emailing access@windmill.org.au.

Auslan Interpretation

Auslan interpreted performances are available for selected shows in every performance season at Adelaide Festival Centre.

During an Auslan interpreted performance, an interpreter stands in a clearly visible location to the audience, and interprets the spoken word and sound effects for Deaf patrons who require Auslan. When booking please ensure you notify ticketing staff that you are seeing an interpreted performance so they can provide the best seating for you to see the interpreter.

Auslan interpretation services are available for school performances on demand – contact access@windmill.org.au or call 08 8210 7200 to request.
