About Windmill

Windmill Performing Arts was formed in 2002 as an initiative of the South Australian Government. The aim was to establish a company that provides the highest quality performance experiences to inspire and enrich the cultural life and imagination of children and their families.

Windmill quickly grew to become not only South Australia's premier family theatre company but also Australia's. As such, the company regularly presents work locally and nationally, with growing demand on an internationally level.

Since its inception, the company has presented more than 26 different productions in Adelaide and toured through regional South Australia with various shows. Windmill has also premiered two productions interestate (Melbourne and Sydney) and toured nationally to the ACT, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

Windmill's international touring repertoire includes USA (New York, Minneapolis, Seattle, Pittsburgh), Canada, Hong Kong, Japan (Osaka, Toyko, Regional Japan) and New Zealand.

A multi-award winning company, Windmill has been nominated for more than 25 Awards since 2002. Currently, the company has won 12, including three prestigious national Helpmann Awards: two for Best Presentation for Children and one for Best Visual or Physical Theatre Production.

Windmill is also more than just a theatre company. As an organisation, it maintains an outstanding Community Program, a comprehensive Arts Research Program, is actively part of various community and creative initiatives (including Picture Book to Performance and Generation G) and is a leader in commissioning and producing new work.

Windmill is dedicated to the premise that children are our most vulnerable and precious resource, and that by igniting their creative spark we foster their cultural and social development. Based on this, Windmill strongly supports and advocates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and has made Articles 28 & 29 - Young children's education and learning, and Article 31 - Young children's access to cultural and artistic life integral parts of the company's operating philosophy.

The company firmly believes that creative inspiration leads to a well-rounded community and, in recognising children's needs and rights in this area, we enrich theirs and our own lives.
